The battle of competing translations, a new publishing phenomenon which began with One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, now offers two rival American editions of Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. Mirra Ginsburg's (Grove Press) version is pointedly grotesque: she delights in the sharp, spinning, impressionistic phrase. Her Bulgakov reminds one of the virtuoso effects encountered in Zamyatin and Babel, as yell as the early Pasternak's bizarre tale of Heine in Italy. Translator Michael Glenny, on the other hand, almost suggests Tolstoy. His (Harper & Row) version is simpler, softer, and more humane. In any case, The Master and Margarita, a product of intense labor from 1928 till Bulgakov's death in 1940, is a distinctive and fascinating work, undoubtedly a stylistic landmark in Soviet literature, both for its aesthetic subversion of ""socialist realism"" (like Zamyatin, Bulgakov apparently believed that true literature is created by visionaries and skeptics and madmen), and for the purity of its imagination. Essentially the anti-scientific, vaguely anti-Stalinist tale presents a resurrected Christ figure, a demonic, tricksy foreign professor, and a Party poet, the bewildered Ivan Homeless, plus a bevy of odd or romantic types, all engaged in socio-political exposures, historical debates, and supernatural turnabouts. A humorous, astonishing parable on power, duplicity, freedom, and love.

Mejor que "La insoportable levedad del ser"

Pues que encontré el bló de un lunático llamado Maciej. Escribe bien suave, lo recomiendo ampliamente. Un post suyo muy divertido habla del punto en una relación en el que dos amantes apenas se van conociendo, seduciendo, y hay que compartir libros. Es delicado pues no quieres parecer un pelma, y tampoco vas a recomendar uno muy tremendo que ni lea. Quieres mostrar gusto refinado pero también quieres que se ría y que lo lea en una semana para tener conversación. Y en este punto muchas personas se recomiendan "La insoportable levedad del ser" de Milan Kundera pero no, ese libro es malo, hasta el autor lo reconoce. Así que aquí tienes una lista de mejores libros, con razones de por qué son mejores y otros detalles muy considerados:

Este libro es muy extraño. ¿Qué pasa, de qué se trata? ¡De un montón de cosas! Un escritor y su amada, el diablo y sus acólitos, un poeta que desiste, Joshua, su amigo, Poncio Pilato, otros personajes periféricos. Ocurren accidentes, funciones de magia oscura, un aquelarre, con escenas de la pasión de Cristo entreveradas. Y el Cristo no es mesiánico, es algo inocentón, pero congruente con el discurso cristiano.

Pero está raro por más razones. El héroe aparece hasta el tercer capítulo, unas cien páginas adentro. La heroina parece delicada, pero toma el Poder y es audaz cuando baja a los infiernos. Pero es delicada pues redime a una pecadora. Pero no, también es malvada. Pero queremos que triunfe. ¡Ay!

Tiene dos tonos este libro: uno es divertido, jocoso, socarrón, difícil de creer, es el tono del tiempo presente. El otro tono es la voz del héroe en su novela, es solemne y patético, apropiado para una narración tristísima de la pasión de Cristo.

Terminé de leer este libro en un estado de ánimo algo extraño. He leido más acerca dél y veo que hay mucho entusiasmo. Muchos lectores hablan de muchos temas que yo no capté del todo. Parece ser que hasta hay recorridos que muestran los lugares de la novela. No sé si volver a leerlo. Pero está bueno, lo recomiendo.

Oikein vetävästi ja hilpeästi alkava kirja, joka kuitenkin pian rupeaa käymään hiukan puuduttavaksi. Joka tapauksessa kirja on sen verran kuuluisa, etten oikein tiedä, mitä odotin, mutta tapahtumat ja tyyli olivat lopulta jotain sellaista, mitä en ainakaan osannut odottaa. Saatana apureineen saa moskovalaiset lähinnä hölmöilemään itsekseen ja tekemään toisilleen pikkumaisia jäyniä ja kostoja, ei ryhtymään mihinkään todelliseen pahuuteen. Kiinnostavana lisänä tässä painoksessa on kursiivilla merkitty kohdat, joita Neuvostoliitossa julkaistussa painoksessa ei ole ollut, ja siitä voi yrittää miettiä, millaisia detaljeja siellä on sensuroitu. Jostain syystä esimerkiksi hymyily niin, että hampaat näkyvät, on päätynyt säännönmukaisesti sensuurin kouriin.
